Oriental Land Company (OLC), the owner of Tokyo Disney Resort, has released the first financial and operational data for Disney's highly anticipated cruise ship in Japan . The information, published in the first-quarter results for fiscal year 2027, confirms that the ship will begin sailing in fiscal year 2028 and reveals key figures regarding its construction, capacity, and pricing.
The project, named Disney Cruise Line Japan, represents a new revenue stream for OLC and aims to reduce its reliance on the Maihama resort. According to the company, the cruise business model is less vulnerable to weather conditions and is not limited by land space, making it a highly profitable and resilient venture . Furthermore, it is expected to create jobs by attracting international talent.
Ship features and design

The ship, which will sail under the Japanese flag, will have approximately 140.000 gross tons and will house around 1.250 cabins, with a capacity for approximately 4.000 passengers and a crew of about 1.500. Its design is based on the Disney Wish , which entered service in 2022, although with modifications adapted to the Japanese market. The construction cost amounts to 290.000 billion yen (approximately €1.760 billion at the current exchange rate), to which must be added another 40.000 billion yen (€242 million) in contingency funds. OLC has set a reference exchange rate of 155 yen per dollar and 165 yen per euro for these calculations.
The company has already signed currency hedging contracts covering approximately half of the total investment, with the aim of protecting itself from foreign exchange market fluctuations . This financial move demonstrates the seriousness with which OLC is approaching the project.
Itineraries, prices and target audience
The cruises will depart from the Tokyo International Cruise Terminal and offer short voyages of two to four nights . Prices per person for the most common cabins will range from 100.000 to 300.000 yen, which is approximately €606 to €1.818. The target audience includes families, young travelers, and international tourists visiting Japan.
Onboard, passengers can enjoy the full Disney experience: themed entertainment, a variety of restaurants, different stateroom categories, and signature Disney service . All designed to offer an unforgettable stay at sea.
Financial projections and future of the fleet
OLC estimates that the cruise ship will generate annual net revenues of approximately 100.000 billion yen (around €606 million) and will carry around 400.000 passengers during its first years of operation. Profitability is projected to begin in fiscal year 2029, once the ship is fully operational. The company expects to achieve an operating margin of around 28% initially, which is expected to improve after the ship's amortization period, with annual depreciation costs of approximately 20.000 billion yen (€121 million), is completed.
Regarding expansion, OLC has confirmed that it will consider building a second ship once the first one proves viable . At the moment, there are no concrete timelines, but the company has used the plural "ships" in previous announcements, suggesting that the idea of a larger fleet is under consideration.
With all this information on the table, Disney Cruise Line Japan is shaping up to be one of OLC's biggest bets for the coming years. The combination of Disney's magic with the operational efficiency of a newly built ship promises to attract thousands of passengers, both local and international, and lay the groundwork for a possible fleet expansion in Japanese waters.
