Oceania Cruises has taken a giant leap forward in the construction of its newest ship, the Oceania Sonata , which has just been launched at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy. This milestone marks the beginning of the countdown to its debut, scheduled for August 2027. With 695 cabins and suites, the ship is now at the outfitting pier, where the final interior details will be completed before it welcomes its first passengers.
The Oceania Sonata is the first of a new class of five ships for the company and promises to be one of the most spacious in its category. In fact, it will be almost 30% larger than the Oceania Allura , but will only have 90 additional accommodations, resulting in an exceptional sense of spaciousness. The cruise line has confirmed that the ship will offer an exclusive adults-only environment, with expansive public spaces and a revamped culinary offering.
Features of the new Oceania Sonata
One of the major new features is that a third of the accommodations will be suites, including four two-bedroom Owner's Suites , a first for the Oceania Cruises fleet. In addition, two new categories are being introduced: the Horizon Suites, with over 56 square meters of space, and the Penthouse Deluxe, at 45 square meters, both with spacious terraces and ocean views. The design aims to create an elegant, residential atmosphere, with spaces designed for comfort.
In terms of dining, the ship will offer 13 different options, including two new concepts: La Table par Maîtres Cuisiniers de France and Nikkei Kitchen , which join the already established Jacques, Red Ginger, Polo Grill, and Toscana. The company thus reaffirms its commitment to high-quality cuisine, with one chef for every ten passengers and half the crew dedicated to culinary experiences.
Itineraries and debut in the Mediterranean
The Oceania Sonata will embark on its maiden voyage on August 7, 2027, departing from Civitavecchia (Rome) and bound for Trieste on a 14-day Mediterranean itinerary. Calls will include Malta, Greece, Montenegro, and Croatia, with a particular focus on Greek ports. Following this initial crossing, the ship will continue with an extensive inaugural season until April 2028, visiting more than 90 destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, Mexico, and South America.
Highlights include a 7-day Eastern Mediterranean cruise departing from Athens and arriving in Istanbul, and a 16-day Panama Canal cruise. Shorter options are also available, such as a 10-day Caribbean cruise departing from Miami. The company has confirmed that the next ship in the class, the Oceania Arietta, will arrive in 2029, followed by three more in 2032, 2035, and 2037.
With this launch, Oceania Cruises reinforces its presence in the luxury segment, opting for larger ships while maintaining a sense of exclusivity. The collaboration with Fincantieri, which has already built other vessels such as the Marina, Riviera, Vista, and Allura, continues to bear fruit. The Oceania Sonata is poised to become a benchmark in terms of space, gastronomy, and design, and all indications suggest it will be one of the most anticipated debuts in the coming years.
