Corfu, the island that more than meets all expectations

corfu

Welcome to the wonderful island of Corfu, Kerkira or Kerkyra by the Greeks, the second most populated in Greece. Its mountainous massifs, the transparency of its waters, its more than 200 kilometers of coastline and its interesting historical vestiges respond to any expectations that we have formed.

Although the port of Corfu is not far from the city, it is from the historical part. If you have hired us an excursion aboard your cruise ship, in the same terminal you will find a tourist information office with different options from the local guides or you can decide to explore the island yourself.

I pass you a list, from my point of view of the must-see places if you are in Corfu, but as I always say, everyone who is guided by their preferences:

  • The Spaniada, a huge square, in which you will be surprised that there is even a cricket field. Formerly it was the main square. Next to it is the Museum of Asian Art in the San Miguel and San Jorge Palace.
  • Old Fortress, whose original construction dates from the XNUMXth century AD. C., although the Venetians reformed it in the XNUMXth century. The views from this fortress are sensational. Like from the new fortress.
  • The Ribbon It was built in 1807 imitating the Rue de Revuelar in Paris. Before its construction, during the Venetian occupation, only citizens included in the Libro d'Oro could walk through it.
  • El Byzantine Museum, located in the old church of the Virgin Antivouniotissa. Byzantine icons are displayed on the ground floor and silver objects, jewels, dresses ...
  • El Town hall It is one of the most elegant places in Corfu. A XNUMXth century Venetian building located in the Plateía Dimarcheíou, a square where the Catholic cathedral, the St. Jacob's Cathedral.
  • If you are interested in museums the Corfu archaeological museum exhibits only pieces from the island. It has two pieces of great historical value: the Gordon del Tem pedimentexample of Artemis and the Lion of Menekrates from the XNUMXth century BC. C.
  • La basilica of Peleópolis Today it is not in very good condition, but it was one of the largest Byzantine basilicas in all of Greece. In the same area there are remains of the ancient Roman baths and the Temple of Artemis.
  • And for the end the two typical Corfu prints, the Panadia Vlakherne Monastery, attached to the mainland by an overpass, and mouse island, to which you will have to arrive by ferry.
