For those of us who are neophytes with the subject of sustainable food and nutrition, the Milan Protocol tells us almost nothing. However this is the document from the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition Foundation, for the reduction of food waste, a way to contribute to the alleviation of hunger in the world.

Well, last December Costa Cruceos was the first company in the tourism sector, and in particular of cruise ships, to sign this Milan Protocol.

As he said Milan Protocol, born in 2013, is an initiative of the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition Foundation, focused on the fight against the imbalance in nutrition and food.

It has three main objectives:

  • promote healthy eating habits,
  • reduce food waste and
  • promote sustainable agriculture.

Neil Palomba, General Director of Costa Cruises, during the signing of the protocol stated that “at Costa Cruises we want to continue working to promote a sustainable food model on board our ships. We believe that it is possible to offer our passengers an excellent gastronomic experience, based on Italian traditions, that effectively combines pleasure, health and well-being ”.

Costa Cruises' commitment is being implemented with the evaluation of menus and food preparation processes. Fresh food, brought from local suppliers of the ports where it is called, is prioritized, which also contributes to the reduction of storage waste, and contributes to the conservation of the environment.

Another aspect that is being taken care of is that crew and passengers are involved in this message and a culture of healthy and balanced eating is promoted.

In this sense, let us remember that Costa Cruises and the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo extended their agreement to continue working on Italian culinary traditions, which focuses on promoting a healthy diet. An example of this is that Since last December 5, all the pizzas at Costa Diadema have been prepared only with sourdough yeast. If you want more information about the latter, you can read the article that we dedicate to it.
