I read the good news that Costa Cruises has passed us in its sustainability report when highlights a 4,8% reduction in energy consumption across its entire fleet. In addition, other data that they share with us is that the collection and recovery of waste has been 100 percent.

Continuing with the good data of Costa Cruises in its report En Route to the Future, in terms of sustainability, the reduction of the carbon footprint has been 2,3 percent.

On the company's website we can read that the pillars on which the company is building its environmental sustainability initiatives are:

  • environmental protection,
  • the creation of shared value and
  • responsible innovation

The En Route to the Future report, which presents the sustainability achievements in 2015, is divided into three areas: Sea (sea), You (you) and Tomorrow (tomorrow). The report, in English, can be downloaded directly from the Costa Cruises website.

Continuing with the data that this report shares, they say that fuel consumption per passenger per day has decreased by 3%, and that 69% of the water needed on board has been produced directly on the ship itself.

The company Costa Cruises has commissioned the construction of the first cruise ships powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The delivery of the ships is scheduled for the years 2019 and 2021. If you want to have more information about these ships, I recommend this article.

In 2015, the company also renewed its commitment to caring for biodiversity by cooperating with the Whalesafe Life + project, co-financed by the European Union, for the conservation of sperm whales in the waters of the port of Savona. In particular, what is done are a series of activities on the boats to sensitize children about caring for the sea and sperm whales, and give advice on the correct way to deal with sightings of these protected mammals.
