Excursion through Marseille, what to see and do without fail

Marseilles

Marseille is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful stopovers in the Mediterranean. There is no cruise that is provided that does not pass, at least one day in the French city. To visit it, you have at least two options: hire the excursion that (for sure) they offer you on the cruise or go for a walk and get to know the city for yourself.

I do not dare to advise you one or the other option, that depends on you and the type of traveler you are. I give you some for now corners that you should not miss in this beautiful and cosmopolitan city.

If you have not booked an excursion the Marseille city hall has a free bus from the port to the Old Port, an unmissable visit, like its market and the Le Panier neighborhood, with all the Mediterranean flavor in its narrow streets.

To go from Old Port to Notre-Dame de la Garde you have to take bus 60, or move on the Little Tourist Train (children love this idea) or you can go on the double-decker tourist buses, the City Tours. This assuming that you have not already booked the excursion on the boat, which in that case will provide you with transportation, lunch and the guide.

More things to see in Marseille, the Castle of If, the famous castle of the Count of Montecristo, that despite being a fictional character, many believe that he was actually locked up there. The Fort of Saint Nicholas, behind the Abbey of Saint Victor, or the Palais de Pharo, from which there are beautiful views of the city, are other unpredictable points of the city. I could give you a whole list of important monuments, but I would also like to tell you something about what you should eat in Marseille.

I'll start with the price, regardless of what you think, In Marseille you can find restaurants of all prices. Its gastronomy is based on the exquisiteness of the products of the sea together with the peasant cuisine. Before trying any dish, it is almost mandatory to take the pastis, an anise drink that is taken as an aperitif. The most typical recipe in the city is bouillabaisse (or bouillabaisse)It is a fish stew that can also be eaten as a starter, as a soup.
