Minimum requirements to get a job on board

The subject of working on a boat is something that I have dealt with on other occasions, but I do it again now since some and some of you have asked me, taking into account above all that a year begins and it can be a good time to apply for spring view jobs.

Normally to access jobs You have to fill in a form, you can get it on the websites of the different companies. They will contact you to evaluate your candidacy, for this they will do some interviews, tests and checks. Beyond this particular selection I will give you the minimums that they usually ask for.

The general conditions and requirements that anyone who wants to access a job on a ship are:

  • Minimum age of 18 to 21 years (depending on the cruise company).
  • Previous experience and adequate level of English to work on board.
  • Valid passport, or, failing that, a valid visa or work permit.
  • Valid STCW 2010 (Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping) certificate. Also, some companies ask for the valid Certificate of Crowd Control, Familiarization and Safety on Board of Passenger Ships and the valid Seaman's Book.
  • Medical certificate after a complete pre-employment medical examination. This is usually done by the concerted clinics of the company and if you have reached this point, they already have you.
  • Criminal background check certificate.
  • Availability to work at least 6 months.

Regrettably, As in other labor sectors, there are some companies and people who carry out scams when it comes to finding you a job. So from here I recommend that before getting carried away by promises and attractive job opportunities with maritime companies, make sure that all aspects of the offer are true. And of course do not advance any kind of money, neither to manage the contract, nor for the medical certificate or the validation of degrees.
