Energy Observer, the catamaran only powered by renewable energies

Energy Observer, the catamaran known as the first green ship, has started a trip around the world that will last six years, with the aim of demonstrating its self-sustainability. On this trajectory the green catamaran will pass through 50 countries, on 101 different scales.

The Energy Observer is a ship originally built in 1983, but years later Frederick Dairelem, Viktorienom Erussaron and Jerome Delafosse retrofitted it and turned it into a ship only powered by renewable energy, that they did have to invest about 5 million euros.

The ecological catamaran uses three types of alternative energy:

  • Solar panels
  • Wind turbines
  • Hydrogen fuel cells

And if all else fails the Energy Observer, it will follow the most basic navigation rules and that is it is also equipped with a candle It will allow you to move without other energy than the force of the wind.

The panels are used for kitchen systems and electric motors. Additionally, solar systems and wind turbines provide energy for the electrolysis of water, which causes the separation of water into oxygen and hydrogen. After separation, the hydrogen will be transferred to the cell.

Energy Observer has taken up the challenge of becoming the symbol in the sea of a world as least polluted as possible.

Do not think that this is the only initiative to make maritime transport much greener, Already in October of last year, the multinational Royal Caribbean Cruises announced that they are developing a new class of cruises called Icon, whose peculiarity is that they could be powered by liquefied natural gas and fuel cells. The first of these ships is scheduled for mid-2022, and the second for mid-2024.

And a while ago I told you about Ecoship, a boat that will be developed by the NGO Peace Boat to reduce emissions by 40% compared to ships of similar dimensions with a capacity of around 2.000 passengers. You have the extended information in this article.
